Fetal medicine, also known as maternal-fetal medicine or perinatology, is a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynaecology that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of fetal conditions and maternal-fetal complications during pregnancy. Fetal medicine specialists are trained to assess the health and development of the fetus through various prenatal diagnostic tests and imaging studies, such as ultrasound, fetal echocardiography, and fetal MRI. They diagnose and manage a wide range of fetal conditions, including genetic abnormalities, structural anomalies, growth restriction, and placental abnormalities. Fetal medicine specialists provide counselling and support to expectant parents, coordinate care with other healthcare providers, and may perform fetal interventions or surgeries to improve fetal outcomes in certain cases. They work collaboratively with obstetricians, neonatologists, genetic counsellors, and other specialists to provide comprehensive care to high-risk pregnancies and ensure the best possible outcomes for both mother and baby.
