Gastroenterology is a medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the digestive system, including the oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Gastroenterologists diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), liver diseases (such as hepatitis and cirrhosis), pancreatic diseases (such as pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer), and gastrointestinal cancers (such as colon cancer and stomach cancer). They utilize various diagnostic tests and procedures, such as endoscopy, colonoscopy and imaging studies, to evaluate and treat patients. Gastroenterologists may prescribe medications, recommend dietary changes, perform therapeutic procedures surgical interventions (such as laparoscopic surgery and liver transplantation) to improve patients' digestive health and quality of life.
