Neonatology is a subspecialty of paediatrics that focuses on the care of new-born infants, particularly those who are premature or have medical conditions that require specialized treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Neonatologists diagnose and manage a wide range of medical conditions and developmental issues specific to new-borns, including prematurity, respiratory distress syndrome, jaundice, infections, birth defects, and low birth weight. They provide comprehensive care to new-borns, including respiratory support, nutritional support, monitoring of vital signs, and management of medical and surgical interventions. Neonatologists work closely with other healthcare providers, such as obstetricians, paediatricians, paediatric surgeons, and neonatal nurses, to provide multidisciplinary care and support to new-borns and their families.
